Nestled like a well-trodden necklace made of dirt on the east flank of South Mountain, this relatively easy hike still proved to be a big challenge to my sweet puff, Gianni. Watching his little legs kick up dust as he battled to keep up with his bigger brother, Bear, was a sight to behold. An inspirational sight! For you see, the three of us have a goal. We aim to best Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff next year and have got to get into solid hiking shape. I've been doing better exercise-wise, but my boys are still hairy couch potatoes and that's got to change. Picking Gi up for big chunks of the hike, he still managed to trek over a mile on terrain unfamiliar to his pampered paws. Goals are good. We're gonna make it to the top.

PS - I do plan on purchasing a hiking back that allows me to carry one of the boys comfortably at a time. That way bigger, harder hikes can be achieved and their smallness can be respected.
